Remember the good old days when after a 2 year contract with your phone company, you could upgrade to the latest release of cell phones for like $99? I do. I got the iPhone 4s with mine. It was the first version with Siri and a forward facing camera and you couldn’t tell me SHIT. I remember my best friend decided on the Samsung Evo (back when that was a thing) and you couldn’t tell her shit, either.

Gone are those days of sensible phone prices and 730 day contractual obligations. Apple will be releasing the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus soon. You know what one of those bad boys will cost you? Between $649 (iPhone 7 32GB) and $969 (iPhone 7 Plus 256GB). I don’t care what anyone says. That’s a whole lot of money, and having the option to pay it off in $30/month installments doesn’t make it any less expensive.

Now to be clear, I mean no shame to the people who will shell out that money for the latest iPhones. Y’all are the real MVPs. I just happen to not be one of you. I’m a type of woman who likes to weigh all of her options. So although I am enticed by the waterproof design (finally) and  those fancy-shmancy dual cameras, I can’t help but think about all the traveling I could do instead with that kind of money.

For $738, just under the cost of a 128GB iPhone 7, you could take a Royal Caribbean winter escape cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. What’s on the itinerary, you ask? Labadee, Haiti. San Juan, Puerto Rico. Phillisburg, St. Marteen. Basseterre, St. Kitts. Is that enough Caribbean indulgence for you? Don’t forget about all of the cruise ship amenities and activities at your fingertips while at sea. Psssshhhhhhh, I would gladly carry a disposable camera and Nextel phone for the next 12 months in exchange for taking this trip.

Willing to travel from New York or Boston with a tried and trusted travel partner down for whatever? Right now, you two could book a Groupon vacation to Reykjavík, Iceland INCLUDING roundtrip airfare and 4 star hotel accommodations at only $600 per person. That’s $50 less than the cost of a 32GB iPhone 7. You may be thinking, “why the hell would I want to go to Iceland?”, but you’d be surprised at how many hidden treasures you can find over there. Just think about it. How many times in your life will you get to see freaking Iceland? And how many times in your life will your current iPhone be rendered archaic and overshadowed by a newer, more expensive model?

According to flight prices advertised on Skyscanner.com, you could literally buy a roundtrip ticket from Chicago to different state every month for the next 6 months for less than the cheapest iPhone 7.

  • September ’16: Nashville, Tennessee ($68)
  • November ’16: New Orleans, Louisiana ($98)
  • December ’16:  Houston, Texas ($98)
  • January ’17: Phoenix, Arizona ($107)
  • February ’17: Tampa, Florida ($82)
  • March ’17: New York, New York ($117)

Let’s see…68+98+98+107+82+117 = $570. The 32GB iPhone 7 starts at $649.

Get roundtrip airfare from New York, plus 6 nights accommodation split between Budapest, Hungary and Prague, Czech Republic for $1,052 with Virgin Vacations. That’s price is for a SOLO trip, so bringing a travel partner along will make the price even lower. Just imagine, you could be relaxing in the Széchenyi Thermal Bath with bae and taking stunt-tacular shots for instagram on the Charles Bridge for just barely $100 more than the cost of a 256GB iPhone 7 Plus. It may sound crazy to spend that much money traveling to a place where you don’t even speak the language, but is it really more or less sensible than spending $1,000 for a phone?

Drag your best friend, cousin, or boo-thang along to spend 4 days and 3 nights at an ALL INCLUSIVE Mexican resort with roundtrip airfare for about $750 per person courtesy of Expedia package deals. That’s just lower than the price of a 32GB iPhone 7 Plus. Cabo San Lucas was my first international trip, so I can personally attest to the city being well worth the cost. But this is an all-inclusive stay. So not only do you have access to the amazing local Cabo attractions, but you also get the luxuries of the hotel food, bars, spas, water activities, and even childcare included in your stay! I assure you, the footage of you tanning on the beach near those sparkling blue waters can be captured just fine on your current iPhone 6 or 5s. Don’t you think?

Great post! I love all these vacation ideas! I love my IPhone too but you are right. They are way too expensive and if those costs are correct I’ll keep my 6 and keep traveling lol

    • Ditto! I’m always like a 1.5 generations behind, but as long as my iOS is updated I’m just fine lol.
